Take a Look Back in 2011

One day left and it will be the noisy New Year, but before we step and say hello to 2012’s first day, let us have a flash back on events that awakened various emotions to us this 2011.

“Revealer of the Year”

For the first day of February, Commission on Audit’s former auditor Heidi Mendoza unraveled the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) irregularities and cover-ups in financial transactions.  Seven days later, AFP Chief of Staff Angelo Reyes apparently killed himself using a gun due to this issue.

“Most Shocking Event”

Back in February, three Filipinos (Ramon Credo, Sally Villanueva and Elizabeth Batain) are sentenced to death in China for drug trafficking. Despite the pleas and visit of Vice President Jejomar Binay, the three OFWs were executed by lethal injection. They were the first Filipinos to die in China.

“Greatest Disappointment of the Year”

Former Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez continued to be the disappointment for this year. She may be lucky to have dismissed a complaint against her, but karma struck her in 2010 and forced her to resign this May.  She definitely failed to fulfill her role as an Ombudsman.

“The Most Generous”

Instead of staying more with shame, Juan Miguel Zubiri decided to resign from his position, feeling that being in that position is such dismay. It was announced that he won allegedly by cheating. Atty. Koko Pimentel, who’s his rival before and the supposed winner, took the position immediately after he left.

“Most Promising Reaction of the Year”

People in politics are seen as stoic and strict, but if their other sides accidentally slipped out of their tongue, that’s a scene worth seeing. Court Spokesman Midas Marquez accidentally reacted oppositely in what was expected of him to react and now, AKBAYAN wants him to resign.

“Most Charitable Work”

Or is it? Hacienda Luisita was finally given to the farmers who have been claiming it for years now. Though, Kris Aquino complained that they will suffer, so she encouraged the public to support her shows.

“Typhoon of the Year”
Surpassing Ondoy’s berserk last year was Sendong (internationally named Washi). Hitting Cagayan de Oro with a swift thrust, it claimed thousands of lives along with him.

“Most Saddening Event”

Countless lives have been erased in existence and thousands are still missing of this moment. Typhoon Sendong’s rage definitely crushed the happiness and zealousness of people in Cagayan de Oro. But right now, they are slowly recovering the wounds of the past and trying to revive their normal lives again.

“Fight of the Year”

More powerful than Pacquiao’s fight against Marquez is Secretary of Justice Leila de Lima’s match against Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. With a knockout by de Lima’s iron fist, Arroyo failed to leave the country to get some medication.

“The Greatest Adversaries for the Decade”

PNoy vs. Arroyo. They have fights that won’t be easily forgiven and forgotten since the entire country is the problem. President Aquino is slowly winning right now though; he managed to put Arroyo in a hospital arrest in Veteran’s Memorial Medical Center.
